Google Shopping is the highest-intent channel most stores have: someone searching for a specific product sees the image, price and seller straight in the results. Everything runs on Google Merchant Center — the free listings in Search and the Shopping tab, and paid Shopping and Performance Max campaigns. Connecting Shopify takes minutes. Getting every product approved, and keeping it approved, is the real work.
Connecting Shopify in five steps
- Install Shopify's Google & YouTube app and connect the Google account that also owns Search Console and Google Ads.
- Link an existing Merchant Center account or create one; the domain is verified through the connection.
- Choose target countries and languages — the UK in English and GBP, plus each market you ship to.
- Set shipping costs and the return policy in Merchant Center exactly as they apply in your store.
- Sync products, then check Diagnostics after 24 to 72 hours for disapprovals and warnings.
The app sends titles, descriptions, images, price, availability, barcode and variants, and keeps the feed updated. It also overwrites anything you change by hand in Merchant Center — so corrections always belong in Shopify.
The disapprovals we see most
| Issue | Cause | Fix in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Price mismatch | Feed and page prices differ, often because of an app or currency conversion | Check price apps; keep Markets currencies and rounding consistent |
| Missing or invalid GTIN | Barcode empty, filled with the SKU, or the wrong length | Put the real barcode (8, 12, 13 or 14 digits) in the variant's barcode field; flag own-brand items without one |
| Missing shipping | No shipping setting for the target country in Merchant Center | Add shipping in Merchant Center or import it from Shopify |
| Image rejected | Promotional overlays, text, watermarks or low resolution | First image clean; 800 × 800 pixels or larger is recommended |
| Landing page unavailable | Password page, redirect or blocked variant URL | Open the store, test variant URLs, check robots.txt |
| Misrepresentation | Missing contact details, returns policy or business information | Clear contact, returns, shipping and terms pages linked in the footer |
GTINs and own-brand products
For branded products with a manufacturer barcode, Google expects the GTIN together with the brand. In Shopify, the GTIN goes in the variant's barcode field — never an internal SKU. If you sell handmade or own-brand products without a barcode, flag them as having no GTIN instead of inventing numbers. Invalid GTINs are detected and limit visibility.
Misrepresentation
Account-level suspensions for misrepresentation hit new stores more than any product error. Google wants to see who you are: a physical address or registered business details, a working contact method, and clear shipping, returns and payment information. Our UK online selling rules guide covers the pages a UK store should have anyway.
Beyond approval: feed quality
- Titles: brand, product type and the key attribute first — 'Brand men's running shoe size 9 black', not a campaign name.
- Set the Shopify product category; it improves Google's classification and unlocks relevant attributes.
- Model colour and size as real variant options so Google can show each variant.
- Fill age group, gender and condition for apparel where Google requires them.
- Show genuine compare-at prices only; Google checks sale prices against price history.
Feed data and on-page structured data should agree. Our guide to Shopify product schema explains how the two support each other, and the Shopify SEO checklist covers the rest of the technical setup.
