Agentic commerce is the name for shopping that happens through an AI assistant: the customer describes what they want, the assistant proposes products, and the purchase follows from the conversation. For Shopify merchants this stopped being hypothetical in 2026, and the details have changed often enough that it is worth separating what Shopify documents from what is speculation.
What Shopify actually provides
- Agentic storefronts: a way to sell in AI channels — ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta — managed from Sales channels in the Shopify admin.
- Shopify Catalog: the route through which product data reaches those channels; Google channels can also draw on the Google & YouTube channel and Merchant Center.
- Default activation: Shopify's help centre describes agentic storefronts as active by default for eligible stores, subject to supplemental terms.
- Attribution: orders show which AI channel they came from, and you keep the customer relationship and post-purchase experience.
Eligibility and the channels available have rolled out by market. Check the Sales channels section of your own admin rather than assuming that what a US merchant sees applies to your store.
How checkout works
This is the part that has changed most. According to Shopify's documentation, on ChatGPT the customer completes the purchase on your online store checkout, opened in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab. On Google, Microsoft and Meta channels, a direct checkout powered by Shopify can let the customer buy without leaving the channel, if you activate it. Either way the order lands in your Shopify admin like any other.
What decides whether your products are chosen
An assistant chooses products by matching a request against product data. Platforms do not publish their ranking, but the inputs are visible: relevance, data quality, availability and price. In practice that means:
- Titles that say what the product is — type, key attribute, brand — not only a product name.
- Complete attributes in typed metafields: material, size, dimensions, compatibility, care.
- GTIN, brand and the correct Shopify standard product category.
- Accurate price and availability, identical in your store, feeds and structured data.
- Images that show the product clearly, and descriptions that answer the questions a buyer asks.
What you control
You can choose which AI channels to sell in from the admin, and you control the data: a product with missing attributes or a contradictory price is easy for an assistant to skip. Review the channel settings deliberately rather than leaving them as defaults, and make sure your returns, shipping and payment terms are stated clearly, because assistants increasingly surface them alongside the product.
This builds on, not replaces, search
Agentic channels sit next to AI answers and classic search. The same groundwork serves all three: clean product data, structured data that matches the page, and content that answers buying questions directly. Our guide to getting cited by AI search covers the content side; product data is the commerce side of the same work.
