How does the theme detector work?
It loads the store's public pages and reads the theme name, version and where it came from out of the markup Shopify itself publishes. Nothing private is accessed and the store owner is not notified.
Can it detect a customised theme?
It reports the base theme a store started from. Heavy customisation can obscure the name, in which case you get the closest match rather than a guess presented as certainty.
Does it work on any store?
Only on live Shopify stores. Password-protected stores, headless storefronts and stores on other platforms return no result.
Is a paid theme worth it over a free one?
For most stores Dawn is enough — it is Shopify's reference implementation of Online Store 2.0. A paid theme earns its cost when it ships a specific layout or feature you would otherwise pay a developer to build.
Is the tool free?
Yes, with no sign-up and no limit. We built it because we use it ourselves before quoting on a store.
