For years, the Script Editor was how a Plus store made the checkout do something Shopify did not offer out of the box: tiered discounts, payment methods hidden from new customers, shipping options limited by postcode. That era is over. If your store relied on Scripts and has been calculating something differently since July, this is almost certainly why.
The timeline
- 15 April 2026: Scripts can no longer be edited or republished.
- 30 June 2026: Scripts stop running. Discount, shipping and payment rules defined in Scripts no longer apply.
There is no error at checkout. The rule simply stops being applied, which is why it can take weeks to notice.
What Scripts did
There were three kinds: line item scripts for product-level discounts, shipping scripts that hid, renamed or reordered shipping rates, and payment scripts that hid or reordered payment methods. Typical examples:
- Buy-in-bulk or 3-for-2 discounts
- Hiding pay-later methods for first-time customers or above a basket value
- Express delivery only for certain postcodes or products
- Free shipping for tagged wholesale or VIP customers
What replaces them: Shopify Functions
- Discount functions for product, order and shipping discounts — the successor to line item scripts.
- Delivery customisation to hide, rename and reorder shipping options — the successor to shipping scripts.
- Payment customisation to hide and reorder payment methods — the successor to payment scripts.
- Cart transform for bundles and merging or splitting lines.
- Cart and checkout validation for minimum quantities or delivery restrictions.
App or custom function?
For common cases there are Functions-based apps in the App Store that run on every plan. When the logic is specific to your business — tied to customer groups, your ERP or wholesale terms — a custom app with its own Functions is the cleaner route. Custom apps that contain Functions require Shopify Plus.
How to check whether something went missing
- If the Script Editor is still installed, read the old scripts' descriptions — the best record of the rules you had.
- Place test orders for typical cases: new customer, large basket, wholesale customer, express delivery, promotion.
- Compare average discount, shipping revenue and payment-method mix before and after July 2026. Jumps point to lost logic.
- Ask customer service whether questions about discounts or payment options have increased since July.
Not everything needs to come back
A switch-off is a good moment to question old rules. Some discount logic belongs to a campaign that ended long ago; some payment rules date from a provider problem that no longer exists. Rebuild only what is still a business decision today.
