Squarespace and Wix are good places to start a store. Merchants usually leave when they need more than the built-in commerce offers: a larger app ecosystem, multi-currency selling, subscriptions, B2B, or a checkout that converts better. The migration itself is smaller than from Magento or WooCommerce โ the risk sits almost entirely in URLs and SEO settings.
What exports, and what does not
- Products: both platforms export product CSVs, which map onto Shopify's import with some cleanup โ especially variants and images.
- Customers and orders: exportable as CSV and importable into Shopify, with order history usually brought across as an archive.
- Passwords: never. Customers receive an invitation to activate their account on the new store.
- Blog posts and pages: content can move, but formatting, images and embeds need checking post by post.
- SEO titles and descriptions: rarely included cleanly in exports and easy to lose.
The URL structures are different
Shopify uses fixed paths: /products/ for products, /collections/ for categories, /pages/ for pages and /blogs/<blog-name>/ for articles. Wix product pages typically sit under /product-page/ and blog posts under /post/. Squarespace product URLs depend on the store page's own slug, usually in a /shop/p/ or /store/p/ pattern, and blog URLs follow the blog page's slug. None of these match Shopify, so every address with traffic or links needs a redirect.
Build the redirect map before the switch
- Export every URL with impressions, clicks or external links from Search Console and your old sitemap.
- Map each to its closest Shopify equivalent โ product to product, category to collection, post to article.
- Never redirect everything to the homepage; search engines treat that as a soft 404.
- Import the redirects into Shopify by CSV before changing the domain.
- After launch, check the top 100 old URLs return a single 301 to a live, relevant page.
Carry the SEO settings across
Titles and meta descriptions written on the old platform are the first thing lost: Shopify falls back to template defaults if they are not imported. Rewrite or migrate them for your top pages, rebuild image alt text, and check that structured data on the new theme reflects price and availability correctly.
Domain, email and the switch
If your domain is registered with Squarespace or Wix, decide whether to transfer it or only point DNS at Shopify. Before changing anything, list every DNS record โ especially email (MX) records โ so mailboxes keep working after the switch. Then change DNS at the quietest hour and monitor orders, payments and 404 errors for the following 48 hours.
What it costs
Small catalogues under 500 products start from ยฃ5,400 with us, including the redirect map, a zero-downtime switch and 30 days of aftercare. Theme work is quoted separately. Most Squarespace and Wix stores sit at the lower end, because catalogues are smaller and there are fewer integrations to replace.
