Shopify development day rates in the UK: what you should actually pay in 2026

What a Shopify developer costs in the UK, why the range is so wide, and how to tell an underpriced quote from a good one.

Ask five suppliers what a day of Shopify development costs and you will get answers between £150 and £1,200. That range is not noise — it maps onto genuinely different things being sold. This is what sits behind each band, and how to work out which one your project actually needs.

The four bands, and what each one really buys

£150–£250 a day is offshore delivery with a project manager in between. It can work for well-specified, repetitive work — bulk product uploads, template duplication, a straightforward theme install. It does not work when the brief needs interpretation, because every clarification costs a full day in timezone lag.

£300–£500 a day is the working range for a senior Shopify engineer, whether that is a UK freelancer, a nearshore partner or a white label agency. This is where you should expect Liquid written by hand, Online Store 2.0 section architecture, metafields used properly and a code review before anything merges.

£600–£800 a day is a UK agency day rate with overhead attached: account management, QA, design input and a studio to absorb risk. You are buying delivery certainty as much as engineering hours.

£900–£1,200 a day is Plus-level specialist work — checkout extensions, Shopify Functions, headless builds, B2B architecture. There are not many people who do this well and their calendars fill up months out.

Why a cheap day rate usually costs more

Day rate is the wrong unit to compare on, because what you actually buy is throughput. A senior engineer at £400 who ships a working product template in a day is cheaper than a £200 developer who takes three days and needs two revision rounds. The second option costs £600 and a week of calendar time — and the calendar is usually what your client is angry about.

The other hidden cost is review overhead. If code arrives without tests, without a Lighthouse check and without a PR description, someone on your side has to read all of it. That is your senior time, billed at your rate, spent checking someone else's work.

The questions that separate the bands

Ask how long one revision round takes. This single question sorts suppliers faster than any portfolio. "Same afternoon" and "within two business days" are different businesses at the same nominal price.

Ask where the code lands. If the answer is anything other than "your repository, as reviewed pull requests", you are buying a black box. Ask who owns the theme afterwards, and get it in writing.

Ask what happens if the first task misses the brief. A supplier confident in their scoping will make the first task fixed-price and fixed-scope. One that will not is telling you they expect ambiguity to be billable.

What a fair 2026 quote looks like

For a UK agency outsourcing Shopify work, £340–£450 a day for a senior engineer with same-day turnaround is the honest market rate. Below £300 you are either buying junior time or accepting a timezone gap that will show up as slipped deadlines. Above £600 you are paying for agency overhead you may already have in-house.

Commitment should move the number. A supplier who charges the same for one ad-hoc day as for twenty days a month is not pricing on capacity planning, which means they have not thought about how to guarantee you availability.
